Winter Vaction Safety Tips
When winter’s cold hand grips my face and freezes my nose the first thing I think of is that it’stime to head south to warmer climates. Every winter people like to migrate to these warm climates to wait for spring’s warm glow. Maybe you are thinking about being one of those people, maybe you are already an avid winter vacationer, but do you know how to ensure that you’re home is safe while you are away for more than a few days?
First you are going to want to give your home that lived in feel. Having neighbors pick up your mail everyday is key. If your mailbox is overflowing with newspapers and other mail thieves will know you are away and will have no problems breaking in. If you can, cancel as many home deliveries you receive while you are away.
Arrange for a friend or neighbor to shovel your walk and driveway while you are away. You could even let your neighbors park their car in your driveway. An empty house is easily spotted when there are 6 inches of snow and no tracks on the driveway. Similarly if you know anyone with a dog, let them take their dog around your yard and leave prints.
Put your house on timers. If lights, televisions, fans, etc. are on timers set to different times during the night and day it will make it seem like there is someone home. However be careful not to let a schedule develop so that someone will be able to tell the same lights are coming on at the exact same time everyday.
When you leave make sure you do not publicize that you will be gone for an extended period of time. Let only a few close friends know so they can watch over your house.
