Roadside America

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Some of my favorite memories are of the road trips I’ve taken. I think everyone needs to take at least five road trips in their lifetime. I bet you were expecting me to say one right? Well one road trip is never enough. See, if it is everyone’s first road trip it will be a lot of fun, but the more road trips you take, the better they are. Maybe the first time you’ll forget to stop at every new city sign to take a picture. Maybe you won’t take any pictures - and that is just silly!

One of my favorite parts of the road trip is stopping at random diners for dinner. They are always a little greasier, a little cheaper, and a lot tastier than eating at Burger King or McDonalds. That is why when I came across DinerCity.com I jumped for joy. This website is completely devoted to roadside diner reviews! It has hundreds of them mapped out all over the United States. The website isn’t the prettiest but it has some of the best information you can get.

So everyone go check out DinerCity.com.

If you are into cool roadside attractions you might also want to click over to RoadsideAmerica.com.

Vacation Diary 2.0

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

A lot of people like the keep diaries and scrapbooks about their vacations and how much fun they had with a vacation rental or just on a road trip. Two college grads recently took that to the next level and are recording a hitchhiking trip through all 50 states on their website http://hitch50.com/. It is really pretty amazing. They are hoping the kindness of strangers and a little bit of luck will take them to all 50 state capitals in 50 days or less.

You can view their progress at http://hitch50.com/. There is a giant Google map at the top of the page that tracks their movement via GPS! On top of being able to track them, you can always check out the daily blog posts, watch video clips and look at he photos they take along the way.

It is realy quite amazing.

Vacation Horror story

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Okay this isn’t really a vacation horror story, but a horror story it is.

Today I read an article that suggested around 43% of office employees like you and I work during their vacations. According to this new survey that statistic is up more than 20% from ten years ago.

It is no wonder everyone is always stressed out and in a bad mood! Vacations are not meant for playing catch up people! It saddens me to think that 43% of people are taking time off to work even more. Sure some people are ‘married to their work,’ some people ‘just really like working.’ But if you are really enjoying what you are doing don’t waste vacation days with work. Vacation days are for sitting back and relaxing on the edge of a lake, BBQ-ing, and having a cold beverage, while listening to your favorite album.

So my plea is this

Stop working on your vacation. Take time out for you and your family!

And if you are one of those people who don’t use your vacation time, take next Wednesday off. Stay home, have a milk shake.
